October 20, 1977.

He asked us a question once. Right at the front of the song everybody knows — before the guitars ever took off — he asked whether we'd still remember him if he were gone.

Then he was gone. Nobody ever got to answer him.

So here's the answer. We do. We still do.

Forty-nine years on, the music hasn't faded and neither has the ache. This one is for everybody who never needed that date explained to them. Who hears those opening notes and goes quiet.

The artwork: a black wide-brim hat resting on a worn sunburst Strat, propped against a cypress post in low swamp light. Oak leaves, hanging moss, and one bird climbing toward the sunset. FREE BIRD arched overhead in weathered gold. And underneath, the answer he never got to hear.

We still remember.

I went looking for a way to mark that day and couldn't find one worth wearing. So I made this — for me, and for anybody else who feels the same way every October.
